Obedient Silence
Joseph’s Obedience – Matthew 1:18–25 Dear Friends, imagine the moment. Joseph, a righteous man, betrothed to Mary, discovers she is pregnant. The child is not his. In that culture, betrothal was as binding as marriage. The law allowed him to divorce her quietly or expose her publicly. Either way, shame would follow. Most men would have been angry, hurt, humiliated. Joseph planned to divorce her quietly—to protect her from public disgrace while ending the engagement (v. 19). He was merciful, but still resolved to walk away. Then, in a dream, an angel of the Lord appears: “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (vv. 20–21).
