Trusting God

The Official’s Son – John 4:43-54
Dear Friends, picture the scene: Jesus has just left Samaria, where many believed because of the woman at the well. Now He returns to Galilee, to Cana, the place of His first miracle. Word has spread. People know what He can do.
An official from Capernaum—likely a royal servant or someone of importance—hears that Jesus is back. His son lies at the point of death in Capernaum, twenty miles away. Desperate, the man travels to Cana and pleads: “Sir, come down before my child dies” (v. 49).
Jesus’ reply seems almost sharp: “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe” (v. 48). Yet the official persists: “Sir, come down before my child dies.” There is no argument, no demand for proof—just urgent faith in the One he believes can heal.
Jesus says simply, “Go; your son will live” (v. 50). The man believes the word Jesus spoke to him and goes. On the way home, his servants meet him with the news: the fever left his son the previous day at the very hour Jesus said, “Your son will live.” The official and his whole household believe.
This is the second sign Jesus did in Galilee. The first turned water into wine at a wedding. The second brings life to a dying boy. Both reveal who Jesus is: the One who brings joy and the One who brings life.
Notice what happens. The official comes seeking a miracle. Jesus gives him something greater: His word. The man believes the word before he sees the result. He does not wait for proof; he trusts and goes. And when the proof comes, his faith deepens—now not just in the miracle, but in the One who spoke it. His whole household believes.
How often do we come to Jesus wanting signs—proof, feelings, visible answers—before we trust? Yet Jesus often gives us His word first. “I will never leave you.” “My grace is sufficient.” “I am with you always.” He asks us to believe the word, to go forward in trust, even when we cannot yet see the outcome.
The official’s faith was tested in the journey home—twenty miles of uncertainty. But he believed, and the miracle met him on the road. Our faith is often tested in the waiting, in the walking, in the space between the promise and the fulfilment. Will we trust His word when we cannot yet see the change?
Jesus is still the same. He still speaks life into dead places. He still asks us to believe His word and go. And when we do, we discover He was working all along.
Today, pause in the quiet. What promise of Jesus are you waiting on? What word has He spoken to you that you need to believe before you see? Like the official, take Him at His word. Trust, go forward, and watch the life of God unfold.
Point to Ponder: Faith is trusting Jesus’ word even when we cannot yet see the miracle—because His word is enough.
Verse to Remember: “The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.” (John 4:50 ESV)
Question to Consider: This week, identify one situation where you’re waiting for visible proof before fully trusting God. Write down (or speak aloud) a specific promise from Scripture that speaks to it. Choose to believe the word first, then walk forward in that trust. How does that simple act change your waiting?
