The Daily Word

When our children were young, we tried to teach them their ‘p’s and ‘q’s, to say please, if they wanted something and to say, thank you, when they received anything. Not only is it politeness but it also gives the other person pleasure and makes them feel that they are appreciated.
When we have the opportunity and availability to gather round the Lord’s Table, as we do pretty much every Sunday morning, our main purpose is to remember the work and person of our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ and the of the two p’s and q’s, it is primarily to give thanks for our salvation and our Saviour. During the week, we might have many opportunities to thank God for his gifts to us. We can, individually, in our quiet and prayer times thank God for all that He has done, for current and past blessings and our Father hears our thanks. We are being polite but more importantly bringing pleasure to Him.
Around the Table, collectively, we join in worship, thanks and praise and the bread and wine always point us to Jesus’ sacrificial death, by which we have secured eternal blessing. We need to lose any sense of over familiarity and go back to the sheer joy of sins forgiven and the incalculable price that was paid by God’s son at Calvary. It is the weekly opportunity to say thank you for this gift together with Jesus in the midst.
