Obedient Silence

 Joseph’s Obedience – Matthew 1:18–25

Dear Friends, imagine the moment. Joseph, a righteous man, betrothed to Mary, discovers she is pregnant. The child is not his. In that culture, betrothal was as binding as marriage. The law allowed him to divorce her quietly or expose her publicly. Either way, shame would follow.

Most men would have been angry, hurt, humiliated. Joseph planned to divorce her quietly—to protect her from public disgrace while ending the engagement (v. 19). He was merciful, but still resolved to walk away.

Then, in a dream, an angel of the Lord appears: “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (vv. 20–21).

The angel quotes Isaiah 7:14: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means God with us). The promise of the ages is being fulfilled—right in Joseph’s life.

Joseph wakes up and does exactly what the angel commanded. He takes Mary as his wife. He does not consummate the marriage until after Jesus is born. And when the child comes, he names Him Jesus, as instructed.

This short passage is astonishing. Joseph never speaks a word in Matthew 1. His obedience is silent but complete. He accepts the scandal, the whispers, the questions. He steps into the role of earthly father to the Son of God—not because he understood everything, but because he trusted God’s word.

We often think faith requires perfect understanding. Joseph shows us otherwise. He had more questions than answers. Yet he believed the angel’s message, obeyed, and became part of God’s rescue plan.

This is the quiet power of obedience. When God speaks—through Scripture, through His Spirit, through a clear prompting—we don’t always get the full picture. But we are called to trust and act. Joseph’s “yes” protected Mary, provided for Jesus, and fulfilled prophecy.

Today, pause in the quiet. Where is God asking you to obey, even when it doesn’t make sense to the world? Perhaps it’s forgiving someone who doesn’t deserve it, stepping into a hard conversation, or trusting Him with a future you can’t see. Like Joseph, you don’t need to understand every detail. You need to trust the One who does.

The same God who spoke to Joseph in a dream speaks to us through His Word. He is still “Immanuel”—God with us. And He still works through ordinary, obedient people to accomplish extraordinary things.

Point to Ponder: Obedience doesn’t require full understanding; it requires full trust. When God speaks, the safest place is to say “yes.”

Verse to Remember: “When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife…” (Matthew 1:24 ESV)

Question to Consider: This week, identify one area where God has spoken to you—perhaps a command to forgive, to step out, to wait, or to speak up—but you’ve hesitated because the path isn’t clear. Take one small, obedient step this week, trusting that God is “with you” as He was with Joseph. What might change when you do?
