True Friendship

 

A Covenant of Friendship – 1 Samuel 20:1-17

Dear Friends, in 1 Samuel 20 we are given one of the most moving pictures of true friendship in the whole of Scripture. David is in real danger. Saul is determined to kill him, and David turns to the one person he believes he can still trust — Jonathan, Saul’s own son.

David pours out his fear and confusion: “What have I done? What is my guilt? And what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?” Jonathan at first finds it hard to believe that his father would act so secretly against David. Yet David knows the danger is real. Together they form a careful plan so that Jonathan can discover Saul’s true intentions during the coming new moon feast.

What follows is extraordinary. Jonathan does not defend his father or protect his own position as the king’s son. Instead he binds himself to David with a solemn covenant. He asks David to show “the steadfast love of the Lord” to him while he lives, and after his death to show the same kindness to his house forever. In a world of shifting loyalties and political danger, Jonathan chooses faithfulness to his friend over self-interest.

Their friendship is marked by honesty, courage and costly loyalty. Jonathan is willing to risk his father’s anger and even his own future for the sake of David. In doing so he becomes a beautiful picture of covenant love — a love that remains steady when circumstances become difficult.

For us today this passage challenges the quality of our own friendships and commitments. True Christian friendship is not based merely on convenience or shared interests. It is willing to stand with another person when it costs something. It keeps its word. It seeks the other person’s good even when that good may not benefit us.

Above all, the covenant between Jonathan and David points us forward to a greater loyalty — the steadfast love of the Lord Jesus Christ, who bound Himself to His people at the cost of His own life and who will never break His word.

Pause & Pray: Thank God for any true friends He has given you. Ask Him to help you be a loyal and selfless friend to others. Pray also that you would know more deeply the unbreakable covenant love of Christ toward you.

Verse to Remember: “And Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, ‘May the Lord take vengeance on David’s enemies.’ And Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him, for he loved him as he loved his own soul.” (1 Samuel 20:16-17 ESV)
