The Spirit Poured Out

The Day of Pentecost – Acts 2:1-21

Dear Friends, Acts 2 opens with one of the most significant moments in the history of the church. The disciples are all together in one place when suddenly there comes from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind that fills the whole house. Tongues as of fire appear and rest on each of them, and they are all filled with the Holy Spirit and begin to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enables them.

The noise draws a crowd of devout Jews from every nation under heaven who are living in Jerusalem. They are amazed because each one hears the disciples declaring the mighty works of God in his own language. Some are bewildered; others mock and say the men are filled with new wine.

Then Peter stands up with the eleven and addresses the crowd. He explains that what they are witnessing is not drunkenness but the fulfilment of the prophecy spoken by the prophet Joel: “And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh…” Peter quotes the passage at length, showing that the coming of the Spirit, the gift of prophecy, and the promise of salvation for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord are now being fulfilled before their eyes.

This passage marks the beginning of the church’s public witness in the power of the Holy Spirit. The same Spirit who filled the disciples that day is still given to every believer. He equips ordinary people to speak of the mighty works of God. He crosses barriers of language and culture. He turns confusion into opportunity for the gospel.

For us today the challenge is clear. We are not left to serve Christ in our own strength. The Spirit who was poured out at Pentecost still fills, empowers and sends His people. The promise remains: “everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."


Pause & Pray: Thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to fill you afresh so that you may speak of the mighty works of God with clarity and courage. Pray for those who have not yet called on the name of the Lord.

Verse to Remember: “And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 2:21 ESV)

Question to Consider: In what ways am I relying on the power of the Holy Spirit rather than on my own strength as I seek to witness for Christ?

Koine Greek - Entrust or Commit

  Biblical Words & Their Meaning: παρατίθημι (paratithemi) One of the most powerful and tender words in the New Testament appears in 1 Timothy 1:18 when Paul writes to his young protégé:  “This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy…” The Greek word behind “commit” (or “entrust” in many modern translations) is παρατίθημι ( paratithemi ). What does it actually mean? Literally, paratithemi means to place something alongside or to entrust for safekeeping. It carries the rich picture of depositing a valuable treasure into the care of a trusted person — like placing precious items in a secure bank or handing over something of great worth with the expectation that it will be guarded and stewarded faithfully. In everyday Greek it could simply mean “to give over,” “to commend,” or “to entrust.” But in Paul’s hands, it takes on deep apostolic weight. He is not casually asking Timothy to do a job.
