The Daily Word

 

We are officially in a drought situation and as yet there is no sign of significant rain. Even deep-rooted trees are either dying or shutting down and shedding leaves. More than ever, we are realising that water sustains life and that we can no longer take rain and moisture for granted. Today is scheduled to be hotter than yesterday, which means there will be even more precious moisture sucked up into the atmosphere, effectively to disappear.

In the Bible, the significance of water has been well-recognised and used in many parables and other teaching scenarios which are always associated with life, and frequently, spiritual life, a refreshing relationship with God, starting with that initial step of faith as we come to Jesus in our sin and receive His forgiveness. What a refreshment that was to our souls! Can you recall the sheer joy of knowing we are part of God’s family? Never let that feeling go, keep thinking back to the time when Jesus became your Saviour.

But God never intended us just to have that euphoric experience of initial conversion and even back in Isaiah, God inspired the prophet to write these words, “With joy shall you draw water from the wells of salvation!” Within that verse there is a promise we can claim, and should be claiming, to continue to revel in in the blessings of salvation. Jesus said, “I am come that your joy might be full” and the tense of that verb is a continuous tense, that your joy might continue to be being full.

If somehow, we have lost some of the joy of our relationship with Jesus, then we should seriously look at our end of that relationship to see what is preventing us from going into deeper water or drawing from those wells that Isaiah could see and enjoy.
