The passage we will be looking at over the next few days is Philippians 4 and it contains the most spiritual advice in the shortest number of verses. It commences with a challenge and builds on from there.

Paul refers to the members of the church at Philippi as “my joy and my crown”!

Many of us were saved under the ministry of a preacher. Something he said was backed home mightily by the Holy Spirit and we realised our position and what Jesus had done for us and gave our hearts and lives to the Lord. The immediate aftermath was incredible joy and peace, which is still there after many years although some of the shine might have worn of due to our humanity and failure to follow the lord as he would have us to do.

Sadly, many of the preachers who were instrumental in our salvation have gone to be with the Lord. But, we need to ask ourselves, if they were to come back to earth today to where we live and work, would they be able to call us, their ‘joy and crown’? How much joy to we bring to others, never mind the Lord? And to wear a crown of any sort is massive honour, but would the preacher see in us their ‘crown’? Their ultimate accolade. Only by living close to the Lord can we please God and bring glory to Him.

Koine Greek - Entrust or Commit

  Biblical Words & Their Meaning: παρατίθημι (paratithemi) One of the most powerful and tender words in the New Testament appears in 1 Timothy 1:18 when Paul writes to his young protégé:  “This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy…” The Greek word behind “commit” (or “entrust” in many modern translations) is παρατίθημι ( paratithemi ). What does it actually mean? Literally, paratithemi means to place something alongside or to entrust for safekeeping. It carries the rich picture of depositing a valuable treasure into the care of a trusted person — like placing precious items in a secure bank or handing over something of great worth with the expectation that it will be guarded and stewarded faithfully. In everyday Greek it could simply mean “to give over,” “to commend,” or “to entrust.” But in Paul’s hands, it takes on deep apostolic weight. He is not casually asking Timothy to do a job.
