I am not good at DIY. Many DIY jobs require a destructive phase, where the preparation and cleaning work is done, to make ready for the constructive phase and I am OK at that, for example stripping wallpaper or sanding some woodwork. But ask me to build something from a flatpack of pieces and it would probably end up with 3 legs instead of 4 or be lopsided and unstable. I have little intuition as how a collection of pieces should be assembled. Though some people can clearly see the construction route because they are intuitive.

So, I have to resort to the assembly instruction manual, which I have to read through at least twice to have any idea of where to start. Sadly, many of these manuals have been written by people who are either foreign, and translated roughly into English, or actually do have intuition, or frequently both. This for me makes a 15 minute task stretch into hours. 

We have no such difficulty if we want to be successful spiritually, because we have God’s Word, the Bible. This Book is a perfect guidebook for a successful and God-pleasing life. And one of the verses in John’s Gospel summarises this perfectly.

It is believed that the Apostle John wrote his Gospel many years after the other writers and he was able to view the ministry of Jesus and its effect on people’s lives in the light of his life lived serving the Lord. The key basis of our Salvation is who Jesus is, because without His miraculous incarnation, we could never be saved. So John says at the end of his Gospel, “These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God”. 

This instruction manual, the Bible, will never fail us and God has promised that the Holy Spirit will open our spiritual eyes to see what God wants us to do. Only the fact that Jesus was, and is, God’s Son, possessing all the characteristics of God, i.e., God in a human body, could have enabled Him to live a sinless life and be raised from the dead to return back to His Father. Thus He opened the door to salvation from sin which God has graciously allowed us to go through.

Koine Greek - Entrust or Commit

  Biblical Words & Their Meaning: παρατίθημι (paratithemi) One of the most powerful and tender words in the New Testament appears in 1 Timothy 1:18 when Paul writes to his young protégé:  “This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy…” The Greek word behind “commit” (or “entrust” in many modern translations) is παρατίθημι ( paratithemi ). What does it actually mean? Literally, paratithemi means to place something alongside or to entrust for safekeeping. It carries the rich picture of depositing a valuable treasure into the care of a trusted person — like placing precious items in a secure bank or handing over something of great worth with the expectation that it will be guarded and stewarded faithfully. In everyday Greek it could simply mean “to give over,” “to commend,” or “to entrust.” But in Paul’s hands, it takes on deep apostolic weight. He is not casually asking Timothy to do a job.
