A Sign for a Rebellious House

Eyes That Do Not See – Ezekiel 12:1-12

Dear Friends, in Ezekiel 12 the Lord speaks again to His prophet about a people who have eyes but do not see and ears but do not hear. They are a rebellious house. So the Lord gives Ezekiel a living message — not just words, but an acted sign that the people cannot ignore.

Ezekiel is told to pack his bags as if for exile, dig through the wall of his house in full view of everyone, and carry his baggage out at dusk with his face covered so that he cannot see the land. This strange behaviour is a sign. It points to the prince in Jerusalem and to all the people still living there. They too will go into exile. The prince will dig through the wall, leave under cover of darkness with his face covered, and be taken to Babylon — yet he will not see the land (a detail later fulfilled when King Zedekiah’s eyes are put out).

The passage is both warning and explanation. The people have refused to see what God is doing and refused to hear what God is saying. Therefore the judgement that comes will match their spiritual blindness. The very things they would not look at or listen to will now overtake them.

For us the challenge is clear. Spiritual blindness and deafness are not only ancient problems. Whenever we choose not to see what God is showing us or refuse to hear what He is saying through His Word, we place ourselves in the same danger. The Lord still speaks. The question is whether we have eyes that truly see and ears that truly hear.


Pause & Pray: Ask the Lord to keep your heart soft and your spiritual sight clear. Pray against any quiet rebellion that would rather look away than face the truth of His Word. Thank Him that in Christ we have been given eyes to see and ears to hear.

Verse to Remember: “Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, who have eyes to see, but see not, who have ears to hear, but hear not, for they are a rebellious house.” (Ezekiel 12:2 ESV)

Question to Consider: Is there any area of my life where I am deliberately not seeing or not hearing what the Lord is saying to me?

Koine Greek - Entrust or Commit

  Biblical Words & Their Meaning: παρατίθημι (paratithemi) One of the most powerful and tender words in the New Testament appears in 1 Timothy 1:18 when Paul writes to his young protégé:  “This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy…” The Greek word behind “commit” (or “entrust” in many modern translations) is παρατίθημι ( paratithemi ). What does it actually mean? Literally, paratithemi means to place something alongside or to entrust for safekeeping. It carries the rich picture of depositing a valuable treasure into the care of a trusted person — like placing precious items in a secure bank or handing over something of great worth with the expectation that it will be guarded and stewarded faithfully. In everyday Greek it could simply mean “to give over,” “to commend,” or “to entrust.” But in Paul’s hands, it takes on deep apostolic weight. He is not casually asking Timothy to do a job.
