When Fear Overrules Faith

 

Waiting on God – 1 Samuel 13:5-18

Dear Friends, there are moments in life when pressure mounts, fear rises, and waiting on the Lord feels almost impossible. Saul faced exactly such a moment early in his reign, and his response changed the course of Israel’s history.

The Philistines had gathered a vast army — thirty thousand chariots, six thousand horsemen, and troops “like the sand on the seashore.” Israel was terrified. Many of Saul’s men hid in caves, holes, rocks, tombs and cisterns. Others fled across the Jordan. Those who remained with Saul at Gilgal were trembling.

Samuel had told Saul to wait seven days until he arrived to offer the sacrifices. Saul waited, but when Samuel did not appear and the people began to scatter, he took matters into his own hands. He offered the burnt offering himself.

The moment he finished, Samuel arrived.

Samuel’s question was sharp: “What have you done?” Saul offered excuses — the people were scattering, Samuel was late, the Philistines were threatening. He claimed he “forced himself” to offer the sacrifice.

Samuel’s reply was devastating: “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God… now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart.”

Saul’s failure was not simply impatience; it was disobedience rooted in fear and self-reliance. He valued the appearance of religious action more than obedience to God’s clear instruction. In that moment he lost the lasting dynasty that could have been his.

God is not looking for impressive religious activity. He is looking for hearts that trust Him enough to wait, to obey, and to leave the outcome in His hands. The “man after His own heart” would later be David — a man who, for all his failings, consistently returned to the Lord in repentance and trust.

Pause & Pray: Ask the Lord to show you any area where fear or impatience is pushing you to act outside His will. Confess it honestly. Then pray for a heart that is willing to wait on Him, even when the pressure is intense.

Verse to Remember: “And Samuel said to Saul, ‘You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, with which he commanded you. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart…’” (1 Samuel 13:13-14 ESV)
