Waiting on the Watchtower

 

“The Righteous Shall Live by Faith” – Habakkuk 2:1-4

Dear Friends, the prophet Habakkuk lived in difficult days. He had cried out to God about the violence and injustice in Judah, only to be told that God was raising up the ruthless Babylonians as His instrument of judgment. This answer troubled Habakkuk even more. In chapter 2 he takes a deliberate step of faith — he stations himself on the watchtower to wait for God’s reply.

“I will take my stand at my watchpost and station myself on the tower, and look out to see what he will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint.” (Habakkuk 2:1 ESV)

God honours his patient waiting. He tells Habakkuk to write the vision down clearly on tablets so that even a runner could read it and carry the message. The vision is for an appointed time:

“For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end — it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.” (Habakkuk 2:3 ESV)

Then comes one of the most important verses in the whole Old Testament:

“Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.” (Habakkuk 2:4 ESV)

This verse contrasts two ways of living: the proud person who trusts in himself, and the righteous person who lives by faith in God. It became a foundational truth quoted later by the Apostle Paul in Romans 1:17 and Galatians 3:11, and it was central to the Reformation.

Habakkuk teaches us that God’s answers may not come immediately, and they may not be what we expect, but they are sure. In the meantime, the righteous person lives by trusting God’s character and promises even when circumstances scream otherwise.

Pause & Pray: Take a quiet moment right now. Are you in a season of waiting, like Habakkuk on the watchtower? Bring your questions, complaints, and fears honestly to the Lord. Ask Him to strengthen your faith so you can live by trusting Him even when the vision seems slow. Thank Him that His word is trustworthy and will surely come to pass. Pray for anyone in our church family who is struggling to wait on God right now.
