Rise Up, My Love – Song of Solomon 2

Dear Friends, the Song of Solomon is a book filled with the language of love — deep, personal, and intimate. In chapter 2 we hear the voice of the Beloved calling to His bride, and we catch a beautiful picture of the relationship Christ desires with His people.

The chapter opens with the bride saying, “I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys.” She sees herself as ordinary, yet the Beloved replies, “As a lily among thorns, so is my love among the young women.” In His eyes she is precious and set apart. That is how the Lord Jesus sees those who belong to Him — not because of our beauty, but because of His love.

Then comes the invitation that runs through the whole chapter:

“My beloved speaks and says to me:

‘Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away…’” (Song of Solomon 2:10 ESV)

Winter is past. The rain is over and gone. The flowers appear. The time of singing has come. The Beloved calls His bride out of the cold and into the warmth of His presence. It is a call to leave behind what holds us back and to walk with Him in the freedom and joy of springtime.

Yet there is also a warning: “Catch the foxes for us, the little foxes that spoil the vineyards.” Even small things — distractions, hidden sins, neglected priorities — can damage the intimacy of our walk with the Lord. Love needs to be guarded.

The chapter ends with the simple but profound declaration: “My beloved is mine, and I am his.” This is the heart of true relationship with Jesus — mutual belonging, security, and delight.


Pause & Pray: Quietly ask the Lord whether there is anything that is keeping you from responding fully to His call to “come away.” Surrender those “little foxes” to Him, and thank Him that in Christ you are His, and He is yours.

Verse to Remember: “My beloved speaks and says to me: ‘Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away.’” (Song of Solomon 2:10 ESV)

Question to Consider: What is the Lord inviting you to leave behind so that you can walk more closely with Him today?

Koine Greek - Entrust or Commit

  Biblical Words & Their Meaning: παρατίθημι (paratithemi) One of the most powerful and tender words in the New Testament appears in 1 Timothy 1:18 when Paul writes to his young protégé:  “This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy…” The Greek word behind “commit” (or “entrust” in many modern translations) is παρατίθημι ( paratithemi ). What does it actually mean? Literally, paratithemi means to place something alongside or to entrust for safekeeping. It carries the rich picture of depositing a valuable treasure into the care of a trusted person — like placing precious items in a secure bank or handing over something of great worth with the expectation that it will be guarded and stewarded faithfully. In everyday Greek it could simply mean “to give over,” “to commend,” or “to entrust.” But in Paul’s hands, it takes on deep apostolic weight. He is not casually asking Timothy to do a job.
