The Harvest is Plentiful

 

“Sent with Authority” – Matthew 10:1-7

Dear Friends, in Matthew chapter 10, we see a significant moment in the ministry of Jesus. Having taught the crowds and shown compassion for them as “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (Matthew 9:36), Jesus now turns to His disciples and commissions them for active service.

He calls the twelve to Himself and gives them authority:

“And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.” (Matthew 10:1 ESV)

This is the first time the disciples are sent out with power to act in Jesus’ name. Notice that the authority comes directly from Jesus — it is not something they earned or possessed in themselves. He then gives them specific instructions:

Go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel (not yet to the Gentiles).

Proclaim the good news: “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons — freely you have received, freely give.

This short passage is packed with encouragement and challenge for us today. Jesus still calls ordinary people (fishermen, tax collectors, and the rest) and equips them with everything they need for the task. The mission has always been about compassion for the lost, authority in Christ’s name, and the urgent message of the nearness of God’s kingdom.

The disciples were not sent out with clever strategies or impressive resources — they were sent with the authority and message of Jesus Himself. That same principle applies to us. We are not expected to go in our own strength, but in His.

Pause & Pray: Take a quiet moment right now. Thank the Lord that He still calls and equips His people for service. Ask Him to show you where He is sending you — whether in your family, workplace, church, or neighbourhood. Pray for boldness to proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is near, and for compassion for those who are lost and struggling. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you afresh with His power and authority for whatever task He has for you today.

Verse to Remember: “And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’” (Matthew 10:7 ESV)

Question to Consider: Jesus gave the disciples both authority and a clear message to proclaim. In your own life, where might the Lord be calling you to step out in faith and serve others in His name? What fears or feelings of inadequacy might be holding you back, and how can you trust in Christ’s authority instead of your own strength this week?
