The Daily Word

 

In America, there is a song which comes next to the American National Anthem in importance, which is called, the Battle Hymn of the Republic and its first line goes like this, “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord”. I haven’t a clue how the rest of it goes, but it contains the word ‘Glory’. It turned me to 2 verses in the Bible, one in the Old Testament and the other in the New.

The first verse is found in Deuteronomy 5 and says, “The Lord our God has shown us His glory and His greatness!”. 

This was the response of the Children of Israel when Moses came down with the 10 Commandments and the way they were given by God to Moses. This was the best way they could think of to express the physical miracles and events when God spoke to Moses on the Mount and also the escape across the Red Sea. God worked in a miraculous way and showed some of His infinitely glorious character by physical signs to encourage the People.

And then we turn over to the New Testament, to John’s Gospel 1 where again we get the same word ‘glory’ used again. John says about Jesus, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, (the glory as of the only begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth”. We never witnessed the physical glory that the People of Israel did in those far off days, But far more importantly for our Salvation, we have seen the spiritual glory of our Saviour, and we can echo John’s words, because we have received His grace and we know Him to be “the Way, the Truth and the Life”. Hallelujah, what a Saviour!
