We are continuing our look at Numbers 6 24-26 to see how this blessing from God, through Moses, to the Children of Israel is now fulfilled for us as God’s redeemed people, and we come to the lovely statement, “(May the Lord) be gracious to you”.

God’s grace, unmerited favour, was shown all the way through the Old Testament to His earthly people. Yes, there were sad occasions when God had to mete out justice because of persistent rebellion, but He always returned with mercy and restoration.

God is the author of grace, it is part of His character. But all the way through the Old Testament, God knew how that grace was going to be revealed in a once-for-all appearance of His Son, Jesus, on earth and in John 1 v 17 we have the contrast between the Old and New Testaments, ‘For the Law was given through Moses BUT grace and truth came through Jesus Christ’.

Jesus was God’s ultimate offering of grace to us as failed human beings and Paul goes on to say, “For (we) know, (have experienced) the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, though He was rich, yet for our sakes He became poor, that we through His poverty might be made rich”. God is still gracious to us on a day-by-day basis but the sacrifice of our Saviour to save us from our sins goes infinitely beyond any demonstration of grace thereafter!

Koine Greek - Entrust or Commit

  Biblical Words & Their Meaning: παρατίθημι (paratithemi) One of the most powerful and tender words in the New Testament appears in 1 Timothy 1:18 when Paul writes to his young protégé:  “This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy…” The Greek word behind “commit” (or “entrust” in many modern translations) is παρατίθημι ( paratithemi ). What does it actually mean? Literally, paratithemi means to place something alongside or to entrust for safekeeping. It carries the rich picture of depositing a valuable treasure into the care of a trusted person — like placing precious items in a secure bank or handing over something of great worth with the expectation that it will be guarded and stewarded faithfully. In everyday Greek it could simply mean “to give over,” “to commend,” or “to entrust.” But in Paul’s hands, it takes on deep apostolic weight. He is not casually asking Timothy to do a job.
