Returning to the Lord with All Your Heart – 1 Samuel 7

Dear Friends, after twenty years of spiritual decline and the Ark of the Covenant being away from the centre of Israel’s life, the people finally began to lament after the Lord. Samuel called them to a decisive turning point: “If you are returning to the Lord with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you and direct your heart to the Lord and serve him only” (v.3).

The people responded in genuine repentance. They put away their idols, gathered at Mizpah, fasted, and confessed their sin. This was not a superficial change — it was a wholehearted return to the Lord.

Then the enemy came. The Philistines heard that Israel had gathered and went up against them to attack. In their fear, the people asked Samuel to cry out to the Lord for them. Samuel offered a lamb as a burnt offering and prayed. And the Lord answered in a powerful way — He thundered against the Philistines with a great thunder, throwing them into confusion so that Israel routed them.

Samuel then set up a stone and named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.” It was a lasting memorial of God’s faithfulness when His people returned to Him with repentant hearts.

This chapter is a wonderful picture of revival. When God’s people turn from sin, put away idols, and seek Him wholeheartedly, He responds with power and deliverance. The same God who helped Israel is still at work today.


Pause & Pray: Take time now to quietly ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart. Are there any “idols” or things that have taken God’s place in your life? Confess them and ask for His help to turn back to Him fully. Thank Him for His faithfulness and ask Him to give you fresh victory in any area where you are struggling.

Verse to Remember: “Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen and called its name Ebenezer; for he said, ‘Till now the Lord has helped us.’” (1 Samuel 7:12 ESV)

Question to Consider: Is there any area in your life where you need to make a fresh return to the Lord with all your heart? What practical step of repentance might God be calling you to take this week?

The Baptism Testimony of Alfie

Alfie Cox Alfie has had a strong faith from an early age, eventually getting baptised at South Featherstone Gospel Hall at the tender age of eight on 6th April 2025. And what a day it was with all the worship music being chosen by Alfie himself, a full immersion baptism (it's a good job he can swim - lol), and Alfie's personal Testimony about his faith in Jesus Christ, which he gave to a packed Chapel. What a brave young man. The Joy of Live Music in Worship There’s something truly powerful about live music in worship. It’s more than notes, chords, and melodies—it’s a way of drawing hearts together, lifting voices in unity, and directing all our praise to the Lord. This week at our Family Service , we were blessed once again to see the Worship Team expanding for the second week in a row . Donna, our faithful pianist, was joined by Danny and Cameron on guitar , and Emily on vocals . What a joy it was to hear them blend together in worship, each offering their gifts to the Lord and to His people. Moments like these remind us that worship isn’t just performance—it’s participation. A Lost Sheep, A Loving Shepherd 🐑✝️ This past Sunday at our Family Service, we were given a real treat. Brian Preston shared his testimony (which you can watch on our YouTube channel ), and alongside it, he used a set of hand-drawn illustrations that carried both spiritual weight and a touch of nostalgia. These weren’t just any drawings—they were lovingly created by Sandra, Brian’s wife, more than 40 years ago when she was working with children. The artwork is big and bold, all drawn on A3 sheets of paper, and they brought Jesus’ parable of the lost sheep (Luke 15:3–7) vividly to life. The story, of course, is simple yet profound: a shepherd leaves his 99 sheep to go after the one that’s wandered off. It’s a picture of God’s relentless love for each of us—that none are too lost, too far gone, or too insignificant to be pursued by Him.
