Light Shines Out of Darkness

 

“Treasure in Jars of Clay” – 2 Corinthians 4

Dear Friends, in 2 Corinthians 4, Paul continues to defend and explain his apostolic ministry while giving us one of the most encouraging and realistic pictures of Christian service in the whole Bible.

He begins by declaring that he and his fellow workers have renounced secret and shameful ways. They do not distort the word of God but set forth the truth plainly. Their ministry is not about promoting themselves but about proclaiming “Jesus Christ as Lord” (v.5).

Then comes one of the most famous and comforting passages in Scripture:

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” (2 Corinthians 4:7 ESV)

The “treasure” is the glorious gospel of Christ — the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. The “jars of clay” are our frail, ordinary human bodies and lives. God deliberately uses weak vessels so that the surpassing power will be seen to come from Him alone.

Paul goes on to describe the hardships they faced — afflicted, perplexed, persecuted, struck down — yet they were not crushed, driven to despair, forsaken, or destroyed. Even in the midst of suffering, they carried in their bodies the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus might also be revealed in them.

The chapter ends with great hope:

“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.” (2 Corinthians 4:16-17 ESV)

Paul’s eyes were fixed not on the temporary troubles but on the eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

Pause & Pray: Take a quiet moment right now. Thank the Lord that He has placed the priceless treasure of the gospel in ordinary “jars of clay” like us. If you are feeling weak, afflicted, or discouraged today, bring those feelings to Him and ask for His all-surpassing power to sustain you. Pray that the life of Jesus would be more clearly seen in you. Ask the Lord to help you fix your eyes on the eternal weight of glory rather than on present troubles. Pray for those in our church family who are going through hardship right now.

Question to Consider: In what ways are you currently feeling like a “jar of clay” — weak, fragile, or under pressure? How can you trust more fully that God’s power is made perfect in your weakness? What practical step can you take this week to fix your eyes on the eternal rather than the temporary?
