Why Are You Afraid, O You of Little Faith?

 

“Even the Winds and Waves Obey Him” – Matthew 8:23-27

Dear Friends, in Matthew chapter 8 we see a wonderful demonstration of the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ. After a busy day of teaching and healing, Jesus and His disciples get into a boat to cross the Sea of Galilee. What should have been a routine journey quickly turns into a life-threatening crisis.

“And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep.” (Matthew 8:24 ESV)

The disciples, many of whom were experienced fishermen, were terrified. The storm was so violent that even they believed they were going to perish. In their panic they woke Jesus with the desperate cry:

“Save us, Lord; we are perishing!” (v.25)

Jesus’ response is both gentle and powerful. First, He rebukes the disciples:

“Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” (v.26)

Then He rises and rebukes the wind and the sea:

“Peace! Be still!” (Mark 4:39 – parallel account)

Immediately the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. The disciples were amazed and said:

“What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?” (Matthew 8:27 ESV)

This miracle is far more than a dramatic rescue story. It reveals the true identity of Jesus. Only God Himself has authority over creation in this way. The same voice that spoke the world into existence in Genesis 1 now speaks peace to the chaotic forces of nature. The One who created the sea is the One who can command it.

The disciples had seen Jesus heal the sick and cast out demons, but this miracle struck them at a deeper level — it showed His sovereign power over the natural world. Their fear of the storm was replaced by awe and wonder at the Lord who was with them in the boat.

Pause & Pray: Take a quiet moment right now. Think of the “storms” you are facing today — whether they are circumstances at work, health concerns, family difficulties, financial pressures, or inner turmoil. Bring them honestly to Jesus. Tell Him, “Lord, save us, we are perishing!” Ask Him to speak His peace into your situation. Thank Him that He is the same Lord who calms the wind and waves, and that He is present with you in every storm. Pray for those in our church family who are currently in difficult or frightening situations, that they would know the peace of Christ.

Verse to Remember: “And he said to them, ‘Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?’ Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.” (Matthew 8:26 ESV)

Question to Consider: What “storm” are you currently facing in your life? Are you trusting Jesus in the midst of it, or are you panicking like the disciples? How can you grow in faith this week, remembering that the One who is with you is the Master of the wind and waves?
