The Great and Terrible Day of the Lord

“The Sun of Righteousness Will Rise” – Malachi 4


Dear Friends, as we come to the very last chapter of the Old Testament, the prophet Malachi delivers a powerful and sobering message that looks both to the immediate future and far into the distance — to the day of the Lord.

The chapter opens with a stark warning:

“For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.” (Malachi 4:1 ESV)

This is a clear description of coming judgment on those who live in rebellion against God. But immediately after this solemn note, the tone changes dramatically for those who fear the Lord:

“But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.” (Malachi 4:2 ESV)

This beautiful prophecy points directly to the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ — the Sun of Righteousness. Just as the sun brings light, warmth, and healing after a long dark night, Jesus brings spiritual light, forgiveness, and restoration to all who put their trust in Him. The picture of calves leaping from the stall speaks of pure joy and freedom — the kind of liberty that comes when we are released from the bondage of sin.

  • Malachi then gives two final instructions before the Old Testament closes: Remember the Law of Moses (v.4)
  • Look forward to the coming of Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord (v.5) Note:John the Baptist was only a partial fulfilment.

The first instruction reminds God’s people not to forget the foundation of obedience. The second is a prophecy many believe was partially fulfilled in John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus, and will have a further fulfilment before Christ’s return.

The book of Malachi — and indeed the entire Old Testament — ends with this tension: judgment for the wicked, but glorious hope and healing for those who fear God’s name.


Pause & Pray: Take a quiet moment right now. Thank the Lord Jesus that He is the Sun of Righteousness who has risen with healing in His wings. Thank Him for the freedom and joy He brings to your life. Ask Him to help you remember His Word and live in obedient faith as you wait for His return. Pray for those around you who do not yet know Him, that they would turn to the Lord before the day of judgment comes.

Verse to Remember: “But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings.” (Malachi 4:2 ESV)

Question to Consider: As we see increasing darkness and uncertainty in our world, are you living with the joyful expectation of Christ’s return and the healing He brings? Or are you weighed down by fear? How can you walk more confidently this week in the light of the Sun of Righteousness?

The Baptism Testimony of Alfie

Alfie Cox Alfie has had a strong faith from an early age, eventually getting baptised at South Featherstone Gospel Hall at the tender age of eight on 6th April 2025. And what a day it was with all the worship music being chosen by Alfie himself, a full immersion baptism (it's a good job he can swim - lol), and Alfie's personal Testimony about his faith in Jesus Christ, which he gave to a packed Chapel. What a brave young man. The Joy of Live Music in Worship There’s something truly powerful about live music in worship. It’s more than notes, chords, and melodies—it’s a way of drawing hearts together, lifting voices in unity, and directing all our praise to the Lord. This week at our Family Service , we were blessed once again to see the Worship Team expanding for the second week in a row . Donna, our faithful pianist, was joined by Danny and Cameron on guitar , and Emily on vocals . What a joy it was to hear them blend together in worship, each offering their gifts to the Lord and to His people. Moments like these remind us that worship isn’t just performance—it’s participation. A Lost Sheep, A Loving Shepherd 🐑✝️ This past Sunday at our Family Service, we were given a real treat. Brian Preston shared his testimony (which you can watch on our YouTube channel ), and alongside it, he used a set of hand-drawn illustrations that carried both spiritual weight and a touch of nostalgia. These weren’t just any drawings—they were lovingly created by Sandra, Brian’s wife, more than 40 years ago when she was working with children. The artwork is big and bold, all drawn on A3 sheets of paper, and they brought Jesus’ parable of the lost sheep (Luke 15:3–7) vividly to life. The story, of course, is simple yet profound: a shepherd leaves his 99 sheep to go after the one that’s wandered off. It’s a picture of God’s relentless love for each of us—that none are too lost, too far gone, or too insignificant to be pursued by Him.
