The Daily Word

The Gospel of John was written by the Apostle many years after Jesus had ascended back to heaven. It is significantly different to the other Gospels in that it is less of an historical record and much more of a teaching account of Jesus’ ministry on earth. In particular, John devotes a good third of the Gospel to the events of the Upper Room and what he remembers happened there, which is quite remarkable considering how much later the Gospel was written and by which time there were very few of the Apostles left alive to confer with. But the Holy Spirit inspired John’s memory and in chapter 17, as part of Jesus’ teaching in the Upper Room we have the most marvellous prayer when Jesus spoke directly to His Father. This is sometimes called the ‘ Great High Priestly Prayer’.

There are many elements that we could look at with great spiritual benefit, but the early part of the prayer is when Jesus prays for His Disciples and hence for us, if we have accepted Jesus as our Saviour. But He prays for all who will hear the gospel message and says, “This is life eternal, that they may know You, the only true God”.

It shows us that there is only one way to eternal life, that is by knowing God and Jesus came to show us who and what God was like, so that we could, through Him, know God. Earlier in his Gospel, John wrote that most famous verse, John 3 16, “…. That whoever believes in Jesus ….. should have eternal life”. The clearest and most simple route to know God, belief in the work and person of Jesus Christ. Thank God for revealing Himself in His Son!!!
