The Daily Word

When we pass through significant difficulties in life, it eases our burden if there is another person with whom we can share that burden, a like-minded support. There was a popular song I remember which had a refrain with words something like this, “Lean on me, when you’re not strong, I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on” and the first line says, ‘sometimes in our life, we all have pain, we all have sorrow’.

There is a famous little story which has a title, ‘Footprints’, which talks about a man who knew the Lord, who was able to lookback on his life and the events which had happened as though it was a walk along a beach. And he could see, mostly, two sets of footprints, his and the Lord’s, walking side by side past the events in his life and he noticed that at some really traumatic events which had happened to him, there was only one set of prints. So he asked the Lord, “Why did you leave me when I was going through so much difficulty?” And the Lord answered him, “I didn’t leave you, I carried you!”

In Isaiah 42 we have that same promise given to each one of us but in slightly different words but the truth of it is there for us to grasp as we rely on Him, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you!” That promise is ours to keep because we know we are all experiencing life’s difficulties in one way of another, but we have to claim it by prayer and faith.
