The Daily Word

We all order things on-line. We then look to see when it might be delivered and, if it is something really special, there is an air of expectancy and excitement that it could arrive soon, and we try to time our ‘outings’ to be there when it arrives.

In the recent past, in these messages to accompany our prayer requests, we looked at the woman of Somaria, who having met Jesus, went to town and excitedly told people, “Is not this the Christ?” The very name ‘Christ’ means the Sent One, and all through Jewish history, He was expected and the stories of what He was going to do when He came all centred around national freedom from hostile occupation and the restoration of Israel as a fully sovereign nation. Acute nationalism!

But when the Samaritans had met Jesus, they recognised a wider spiritual reason why Jesus had been sent as the Christ, and they answered their own citizen’s question, “This is indeed the Christ…” but added as they realised what the Christ was sent to do, “...The Saviour of the world!”.

They recognised, but separately, what the angel had said to Joseph, His supposed father, before Jesus’ birth, “You shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins”. And there we have His full and only purpose revealed. And we, as believers in our Lord Jesus Christ are now part of ‘His people’. So let us bless the Lord and forget not all His benefits!
