The Daily Word

During His ministry on earth, Jesus had had a busy day, but He needed time alone with His Father, so He sent the Disciples across the Lake of Galilee while He stayed on the other side alone. The story of what happened that evening and night is well told in the Gospels, how a violent storm arose on the Lake and prevented the boat reaching the other side. And try as they could, the Disciples were still stuck in the middle of the lake about 3 o’clock in the morning, no doubt fearful for their lives and totally exhausted with coping with the wind, waves, and noise and soaked to the skin. At that time during the night, everything is difficult and daunting anyway, their spirits must have been at their lowest.

Then, as if that wasn’t enough, they see a human figure, out of the boat, apparently walking on the water!!! No wonder they thought it was a ghost. But that human figure was Jesus Himself and He sought to calm their hearts, minds and spirits by saying these words, “Be of good cheer, it is I; be not afraid!” We know then that He got into the boat and calmed the storm.

Any one of the 3 phrases in that short sentence, spoken by the Lord is worth a study on its own because those words are still true for us today. We can be lifted out of gloom, fear, and turmoil in mind, because it is our omnipotent Saviour who is calling to us and His perfect love, which He offers and gives us, casts out all fear. We just need to trust Him totally.

To quote from another occasion when Jesus appeared unexpectedly to His Disciples, “Then were the Disciples glad when they saw the Lord”. We may not physically be able to see the Lord now, but when we know we are close to Him in spirit, then that joy fills our hearts still.
