Job’s Testimony of Mercy

“Eyes to the Blind and Feet to the Lame” – Job 29:11-16

Dear Friends, in Job chapter 29, we find Job looking back on the days before his great suffering, when life was very different. In these verses he gives a beautiful description of the kind of man he tried to be — a man who lived out practical righteousness and compassion in daily life.

“When the ear heard, it called me blessed, and when the eye saw, it approved, because I delivered the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to help him. The blessing of him who was about to perish came upon me, and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a turban. I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame. I was a father to the needy…” (Job 29:11-16 ESV)

Job’s testimony is powerful. He didn’t just feel sorry for those in need — he actively helped them. He was a defender of the vulnerable, a source of comfort to the grieving, and a father figure to the fatherless. He wore righteousness and justice like clothing that everyone could see.

This passage challenges us deeply. In a world that can often feel cold and self-centred, God calls His people to be people of practical mercy and justice. Our faith should not only be expressed in what we believe, but in how we treat the weak, the poor, the lonely, and the suffering.

Even in the midst of his suffering, Job could look back and say he had tried to live a life that honoured God through active love for others. May that be true of us as well.

Pause & Pray: Take a quiet moment now. Ask the Lord to show you someone in your life who needs practical help, encouragement, or justice. Thank Him for the righteousness of Christ that covers us, and pray for opportunities this week to be “eyes to the blind and feet to the lame” in your own circle of influence.

Verse to Remember: “I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame. I was a father to the needy…” (Job 29:15-16 ESV)

Question to Consider: Looking at your own life, in what ways are you currently being “eyes to the blind and feet to the lame”? Is there someone God is prompting you to help practically this week?
