God’s Miraculous Deliverance

 

“When Chains Fall Off” – Acts 12:1-11

Dear Friends, Acts chapter 12 opens with a dark and frightening time for the early church. King Herod Agrippa, seeking to please the Jewish leaders, began a fresh wave of persecution. He killed James the brother of John with the sword — the first of the apostles to be martyred. Seeing that this pleased the people, he went further and arrested Peter during the Feast of Unleavened Bread, intending to bring him out for public execution after Passover.

The situation looked hopeless. Peter was chained between two soldiers, with guards at the door, and the whole church was under threat. Yet Luke tells us something beautiful:

“So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church.” (Acts 12:5 ESV)

While Peter slept between two guards, bound with two chains, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared. A bright light shone in the cell, the angel struck Peter on the side, and said, “Get up quickly.” The chains fell off his hands. The angel then led him past the guards, through the iron gate that opened by itself, and out into the street. Peter initially thought it was a vision, but once the angel left him, he realised:

“Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.” (Acts 12:11 ESV)

This is one of the most dramatic deliverance stories in the New Testament. Peter, who had once been afraid and denied the Lord, was now experiencing the mighty power of God in a way that even he could scarcely believe at first.

Pause & Pray: Take a quiet moment right now. Thank the Lord for the times He has delivered you — perhaps from danger, from despair, or from situations that seemed impossible. Bring before Him any “prison” you are currently in — whether it is physical, emotional, relational, or spiritual. Ask Him to break the chains that bind you and to lead you out into freedom. Pray for those in our church family who are facing difficult or seemingly hopeless situations, that they too would experience God’s rescuing power. Praise Him that He is still the God who opens iron gates and sets prisoners free.

Verse to Remember: “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.” (Acts 12:11 ESV)

How does the story of Peter’s deliverance encourage you to keep praying earnestly and to trust in God’s power to rescue? What might “getting up quickly” and following God’s leading look like for you this week?
