Finding Peace in the Midst of Betrayal

“Cast Your Burden on the Lord” – Psalm 55
Dear Friends, Psalm 55 is one of the most raw and honest laments in the Book of Psalms. David pours out his heart to God in a time of deep distress, not primarily from external enemies, but from the painful betrayal of a close friend. The psalm moves through intense emotion — fear, anguish, anger, and finally trust — giving us a powerful example of how to bring our deepest hurts to the Lord.
David begins with urgent prayer:
“Give ear to my prayer, O God, and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy!” (Psalm 55:1 ESV)
He describes his overwhelming trouble: his heart is in anguish, terrors of death have fallen upon him, and fear and trembling have overwhelmed him (vv.4-5). He even wishes he could fly away like a dove and find rest in the wilderness (v.6-8).
The deepest wound comes from betrayal by someone he once walked with in sweet fellowship:
“For it is not an enemy who taunts me — then I could bear it… but it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend. We used to take sweet counsel together; within God’s house we walked in the throng.” (Psalm 55:12-14 ESV)
This kind of betrayal cuts deepest. Yet David does not stay in despair. He turns his eyes to God and calls for justice against the wicked (vv.15-19). Then comes the beautiful turning point and the heart of the psalm:
“Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.” (Psalm 55:22 ESV)
David ends with confident trust: “But I will trust in you” (v.23).
This psalm is deeply relevant today. Many of us have experienced the pain of broken friendships, church splits, or betrayal by those we trusted. Psalm 55 shows us we can bring those raw emotions honestly to God. We don’t have to pretend everything is fine. God can handle our anger, fear, and sorrow.
Pause & Pray: Take a quiet moment right now. If you are carrying the weight of betrayal, disappointment, or hurt from someone close, bring it honestly before the Lord. Tell Him exactly how you feel. Then, in faith, cast that burden onto Him and ask Him to sustain you. Thank Him that He will never let the righteous be shaken. Pray for healing in broken relationships where possible, and for grace to trust Him even when people fail us.
Verse to Remember: “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.” (Psalm 55:22 ESV)
Question to Consider: Is there a burden of betrayal, hurt, or anxiety you have been carrying alone? What would it look like practically for you to “cast” that burden on the Lord this week, and how might you live in the confidence that He will sustain you?
