Deception and a Binding Oath

“The Cost of Hasty Decisions” – Joshua 9:3-26

Dear Friends, the story of the Gibeonites in Joshua 9 is both fascinating and sobering. Having heard of Israel’s great victories over Jericho and Ai, the inhabitants of Gibeon devised a cunning plan to save themselves from destruction. They dressed in old, worn-out clothes, carried dry and mouldy bread, and presented themselves as travellers from a distant land. Their deception worked.

“They went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal and said to him and to the men of Israel, ‘We have come from a distant country, so now make a covenant with us.’” (Joshua 9:6 ESV)

The Israelites examined the evidence but crucially failed to do the one thing that mattered most — they did not ask counsel from the Lord (v.14). Joshua and the leaders made a treaty with the Gibeonites and swore an oath to them. Only three days later did they discover the truth: the Gibeonites lived nearby. The people grumbled, but the leaders honoured the oath they had made in the name of the Lord.

“We have sworn to them by the Lord, the God of Israel, and now we may not touch them.” (Joshua 9:19 ESV)

This passage is rich with lessons. First, it shows how easily we can be deceived when we rely on our own judgment rather than seeking God’s wisdom. The evidence looked convincing, but it was false. Second, it highlights the seriousness of oaths made before the Lord. Even when made in error, the Israelites refused to break their word, choosing instead to honour their covenant, though it brought them ongoing responsibility.

The Gibeonites were spared destruction and became woodcutters and water carriers for the house of God — a humble but protected role. Joshua’s leadership here shows both vulnerability and integrity.

For us today, this story warns against making important decisions hastily, especially in spiritual matters, without prayer and seeking the Lord’s guidance. It also encourages us to keep our word and honour commitments we have made, even when they prove costly or inconvenient. God can still work good out of our mistakes when we respond with integrity.

Pause & Pray: Take a quiet moment now. Ask the Lord to search your heart for any area where you have made decisions without seeking His counsel. Confess any haste or self-reliance. Thank Him for His mercy when we fail, and ask for wisdom to seek Him first in every important matter. Pray for the grace to honour your commitments with integrity, even when it is difficult.

Verse to Remember: “But the Israelites did not ask counsel from the Lord.” (Joshua 9:14 ESV)

Question to Consider: Are there decisions you are facing right now where you have been relying on your own wisdom or outward appearances rather than seeking the Lord? What practical steps can you take this week to ensure you “ask counsel from the Lord” before moving forward?
