“The Letter That Brought Joy”: Unity and Encouragement in the Church - Acts 15:22-31
Dear Friends, after the intense debate at the Jerusalem Council, the apostles and elders reached a clear, Spirit-led decision regarding Gentile believers. Rather than sending a cold decree, they chose to send a warm, personal letter accompanied by two trusted men, Judas (Barsabbas) and Silas.
The letter was beautifully balanced. It acknowledged the difficulties some had caused by teaching without authority, and then gave four clear, practical instructions for the Gentile believers: abstain from things sacrificed to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. These were not a new law to earn salvation, but loving guidelines to promote unity between Jewish and Gentile Christians and to help them live holy lives in a pagan world.
What stands out so powerfully is the spirit in which the decision was communicated. The letter said, “It has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us” (v. 28), showing both humility and confidence in God’s guidance. When the letter was read in Antioch, “they rejoiced because of its encouragement” (v. 31).
This passage shows us how beautiful church unity can be when leaders listen to the Holy Spirit, act with wisdom and love, and communicate clearly and graciously. It also reminds us that true freedom in Christ is never freedom to sin, but freedom to live in a way that honours the Lord and blesses His people.
Pause & Pray: Read Acts 15:22-31 slowly. Ask the Holy Spirit:
“Lord, is there any area in my life or in our church where division or confusion needs Your clear, loving guidance? Am I willing to submit to the decisions of godly leaders even when I don’t fully understand?”
Thank Him for the freedom we have in Christ and ask for grace to live holy, unified, and encouraging lives together as His people.
Verse to Remember: “And when they had read it, they rejoiced because of its encouragement.” (Acts 15:31 ESV)
Question to Consider: How can you personally contribute to unity and encouragement in your church family this week? Are there any areas where you need to accept godly leadership with joy rather than resistance?
