The Supremacy of Christ

“With Authority”: The Power of Jesus’ Word - Luke 4:31-37

Dear Friends, after being rejected in His hometown of Nazareth, Jesus went down to Capernaum, a busy lakeside town. There He began to teach in the synagogue on the Sabbath. The people were astonished at His teaching because “his word possessed authority” (v. 32 ESV).

What happened next was dramatic. A man with an unclean spirit cried out in the middle of the service:

“Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” (Luke 4:34 ESV)

Jesus rebuked the demon sharply: “Be silent and come out of him!” The unclean spirit threw the man down in their midst but came out without doing him any harm. The people were amazed and said to one another, “What kind of word is this? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” (v. 36 ESV)

This short passage shows us several important truths about Jesus:

  • His Teaching Had Authority — Unlike the scribes, Jesus taught with the direct authority of God Himself.
  • His words carried power. His Word Had Power Over Evil — Even the demons recognised who He was and were forced to obey Him instantly.
  • His Authority Brought Freedom — The man was delivered completely and without harm. Jesus’ power is always redemptive.

For us as Christians today this passage is both encouraging and challenging. In a world filled with spiritual darkness, confusion, and evil influences, we serve a Saviour who speaks with unmatched authority. His word is still powerful today. When we bring our struggles, fears, addictions, or bondages to Jesus, He can command them to leave.

The people in Capernaum were amazed because they had never seen anything like it. May we never lose our sense of wonder at the authority of Jesus.

Pause & Pray: Take a quiet moment right now. Read Luke 4:31-37 slowly. Ask the Lord Jesus: “Is there any area of my life where I need Your authoritative word today?” Bring any struggle, fear, or bondage to Him. Thank Him that He has authority over every unclean spirit and every dark power. Ask Him to speak His powerful word into your situation.

Verse to Remember: “And they were all amazed and said to one another, ‘What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!’” (Luke 4:36 ESV)

Question to Consider: Do you sometimes forget the authority that Jesus has over every area of life? What situation or struggle in your life right now needs to hear the authoritative command of Jesus?
