The Lord Said to My Lord

“Sit at My Right Hand”: The Exalted King-Priest - Psalm 110
Dear Friends, Psalm 110 (in the Old Testament), is one of the most quoted and most important psalms in the New Testament. It is a prophetic psalm in which David, by the Holy Spirit, speaks of the coming Messiah. Jesus Himself quoted the opening verse to silence the Pharisees (Matthew 22:41-46), and the writer of Hebrews uses it extensively to show the superiority of Christ.
“The Lord says to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.’” (Psalm 110:1 ESV)
This is an astonishing statement. David calls the coming Messiah “my Lord” — a title of great honour. The Messiah is invited to sit at the right hand of God Almighty, the place of supreme authority and power. From that position He will rule until all His enemies are subdued.
Verse 4 contains another remarkable prophecy:
“You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
Unlike the Levitical priests who could only serve temporarily, the Messiah is a priest of a different and superior order — the order of Melchizedek. He is both King and Priest in one person, something no earthly king of Israel was ever allowed to be. This dual role is perfectly fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is now seated at the right hand of God, interceding for us as our Great High Priest.
The psalm ends with a picture of the Messiah’s final victory. He will judge the nations, drink from the brook by the way, and lift up His head in triumph.
For us today, Psalm 110 is a tremendous encouragement. Our Saviour is not weak or defeated — He is reigning now at the right hand of God. One day every knee will bow before Him.
Pause & Pray: Read Psalm 110 slowly and prayerfully. Then pray:
“Lord Jesus, I thank You that You are both my King and my Great High Priest. Thank You that You sit at the right hand of the Father, interceding for me. Help me to live today in the light of Your present reign and coming victory. May I bow my heart willingly before You now, knowing that one day every knee will bow. Amen.”
Verse to Remember: “The Lord says to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.’” (Psalm 110:1 ESV)
Question to Consider: How should the truth that Jesus is currently reigning at the right hand of God affect the way I face difficulties, opposition, or discouragement this week?
