The Daily Word

The verse we have been looking at, 1 Corinthians 15 v 58, finishes with a triumphant flourish and a promise. “Forasmuch as you know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord”.
We are a very results-oriented in our life and outlook. If we do something we expect to see some results. If we are preaching the Gospel, we want to see people being saved. If we are teaching children about the Lord, we want to see them grow and enter the church. But here we have the reward for our work, not necessarily in salvation or increased church numbers but the fact that the Lord knows about what we are doing for Him and our task is to be faithful to Him and to leave the results in His hands.
We don’t do it for the reward, we don’t do it as it were to get ‘brownie points’, we work for the Lord because that is what He wants for us and we want to please Him. Any other motive is not work for the Lord but working somehow out of duty or for our own personal reasons.
If pleasing God is truly our motive and driving force, then we are right in the centre of God’s will and He will bless the work, but in His way and in His time.
