The Daily Word

The first 2 parts of 1 Corinthians 15 v 58 are defensive in nature, resisting Satan and worldly influences to follow our Saviour. But the main parts of the verse are definitely exhorting us to be outgoing and active in our spiritual life. “Always abounding in the work of the Lord”. We cannot get much more active than that!

To me, the key words come right at the beginning, ‘Always abounding’. This implies consistency and effort. King David said similar words, “Shall I give unto the Lord that which has cost me nothing?” To do a job sloppily and casually without caring about the outcome is the worst attitude anyone can display. It is better not to do it than to do it grudgingly. This is our service for the creator of the whole universe, infinitely greater that any earthly king or master. So our service for the Lord should cost us in terms of time and effort and the word ‘always’ does not allow for any variation in effort.

‘Abounding’ suggests seizing every opportunity, even looking for an opportunity to serve the Lord individually or collectively through the church, making the Lord’s service the highest priority in our lives. It reminded me some words of a mission hymn that we used to sing: “Let us do with our might what our hands find to do”. And Mr Smith’s words again come back to me, ‘If you are looking for something to turn up, start with your shirt sleeves!’

We have been saved to serve the Lord, and the Lord needs us to be active not passive in His service at all times, not just when we feel like it or at fixed times. We need to answer this very honestly, Are we always abounding in the work of the Lord? And ask the question that Paul asked on the road to Damascus, “Lord, what will You have me to do?”
