The Daily Word

When we look at the events of the 24 hours before Jesus was crucified, I continually marvel how He could remain so calm and purposeful, because He knew everything that was going to happen to Him. Firstly, He calmly arranged for His Disciples to find and prepare the Upper Room to celebrate the Passover Feast and then spend the day almost as normal with His Disciples until the evening when they all gathered together for that last Passover meal.
At the meal, He could wash His Disciples feet to teach them a practical lesson on humility and then sit down with Judas, who was going to betray Him, which must have hurt Him greatly, but He never shunned any of the awful events that were to come and yet in the middle of all the awfulness ahead, He instituted this feast of remembrance that we celebrate every Sunday.
The Disciples at the time must have been mystified at the words and actions of Jesus. They must have asked themselves what does He mean by ‘my body being broken’ and ‘my blood being shed’. Yet within the next few hours it would become brutally clear. Also, the meaning of the sacrifice He made would then dawn on them after His resurrection and the power of the Gospel would then inspire them after Pentecost for the rest of their lives.
We now have experienced that same power and when we gather together today, we are blessed that the full meaning of Jesus’ death and resurrection has been made known to us and may we afresh worship Him and react like the Disciples when Jesus appeared to them, “Then were the Disciples glad when they saw the Lord”.
