Paul poses a question in 1 Corinthians 4 v 7 that is not a real question, it is a rhetorical question, where the answer is already known. It deals with the question of ‘spiritual pride. Paul has laid out how he came to be an apostle and that he was confident of what he had taught the church at Corinth was given by God and on that basis, because it was given by God, only God, not man, could judge its delivery and results. He stresses it was given to him, he didn’t invent it, and that God was the giver.
There were people in the church at Corinth who were boastful about their knowledge and spiritual superiority, and Paul calls them to account and says, “What do you have that you did not receive?” The question is just as valid for us as it was for them and the answer is the same, NOTHING!!!!. God has given us everything, both physical and spiritual. However long we have been a Christian, it is all of God. Our brains and talents, if any, are given by God. Our very life is given by God. And we need to remember that this will always be true. “where is boasting? It is excluded” Paul could say elsewhere. And like the lord who sent his servants out, having given them varying amounts of money, God expects us to use what He has given us in His service, so we too are accountable to God!
