Prayer in the Name of Jesus

“Ask in My Name”: The Promise of Full Joy - John 16:23-28

Dear Friends, in the Upper Room on the night before His crucifixion, the Lord Jesus gave His disciples some of the most wonderful promises in the whole Bible. In John 16:23-28 He speaks about a completely new way of praying that would become available to them after His resurrection and ascension.

“In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” (John 16:23-24 ESV)

This is an astonishing invitation. The disciples had prayed to the Father before, but now they were to pray in the name of Jesus — that is, on the basis of His finished work, His authority, and His relationship with the Father. Jesus promised that such prayer would be answered so that their joy might be full.

He also revealed the wonderful reason why the Father would answer: “For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God” (v. 27). Because of their love for Jesus and faith in Him, they now had direct and confident access to the Father.

This passage is a tremendous encouragement for every believer. We do not have to beg or bargain. Because we come in the name of Jesus — our perfect Mediator — we can approach the Father with confidence, knowing He loves us and delights to answer.

Pause & Pray: Read John 16:23-28 slowly. Then come to the Father in prayer, using these words or your own:

“Father, thank You that because of Jesus I can come boldly to You. Teach me to pray in His name — not as a formula, but with genuine faith in who He is and what He has done. Fill my heart with joy as I see You answer prayer. Help me to love Jesus more and to trust You more fully. Amen.”

Verse to Remember: “Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” (John 16:24 ESV)

Question to Consider: Are you regularly bringing your needs, desires, and burdens to the Father in the name of Jesus? What is one specific thing you could ask the Father for this week, trusting in Jesus’ name and desiring that your joy may be full?
