Praise Before the Victory

“The Battle Is God’s” – 2 Chronicles 20:1-23

Dear Friends, 2 Chronicles 20 tells the remarkable story of King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah when they faced an overwhelming crisis. A vast army from Moab, Ammon, and the Meunites came against them. Humanly speaking, the situation was hopeless — they were outnumbered and unprepared.

Instead of panicking, Jehoshaphat did something wise and godly. He called the whole nation together to seek the Lord. They fasted and prayed in the temple. In his prayer, Jehoshaphat openly acknowledged their weakness and helplessness: “We have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you” (2 Chronicles 20:12 ESV). What a powerful declaration!

God answered through the prophet Jahaziel with these wonderful words: “Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s” (v.15). He told them they would not need to fight — they only needed to take their positions, stand firm, and see the deliverance of the Lord.

The next day, instead of sending soldiers first, Jehoshaphat sent singers and praisers ahead of the army, singing “Give thanks to the Lord, for his love endures forever.” As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against their enemies, causing them to turn on each other. By the time Judah arrived, the enemy was already defeated. They spent three days collecting the plunder.

This passage is filled with lessons for us today. When we face overwhelming situations — whether in health, finances, relationships, or church life — our first response should be to seek the Lord in prayer. When we admit our weakness and fix our eyes on Him, God often fights for us in ways we could never imagine. Praise is a powerful weapon in spiritual battle.

Pause & Pray: Read 2 Chronicles 20:1-23 slowly. Notice Jehoshaphat’s honest prayer and the power of praise. Then pray:

“Lord, like Jehoshaphat and Judah, we sometimes face situations that feel overwhelming. We confess that we have no power in ourselves, but our eyes are upon You. Thank You that the battle belongs to You. Help us to seek You first, to stand firm in faith, and to praise You even before we see the victory. Fight for us, Lord, and may Your name be glorified. Amen.”

Verse to Remember: “You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf.” (2 Chronicles 20:17 ESV)

Question to Consider: Is there a situation in your life right now that feels too big for you? How might turning your eyes fully upon the Lord and offering Him praise change your approach to that battle this week?
