Love in Deed and Truth

“Love One Another”: The Command That Matters Most - 1 John 3:11-24

Dear Friends, right in the middle of his first letter, the Apostle John returns to one of the central themes of the Christian life: “that we should love one another” (v.11). He does not treat this as a suggestion or an optional extra — it is a clear command from the beginning of the gospel message.

John uses the tragic story of Cain and Abel as a solemn warning. Cain murdered his brother because his own deeds were evil while Abel’s were righteous. John declares that “whoever hates his brother is a murderer” (v.15), showing that hatred in the heart is murder in God’s sight. In contrast, we know that we have passed from death to life because we love the brothers (v.14).

True Christian love is never just sentimental or spoken — it must be demonstrated “in deed and in truth” (v.18). John gives a very practical test: if we see a brother or sister in need and close our hearts against them, how can the love of God be in us? This kind of active, sacrificial love is modelled perfectly by the Lord Jesus, “who laid down his life for us” (v.16). We, in turn, ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.

John then gives wonderful pastoral assurance. Even when our hearts condemn us, “God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything” (v.20). When we love in action and keep His commandments, we have confidence toward God and can ask whatever we desire according to His will (v.21-22).

The passage reaches its climax in verses 23-24:

“And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.” (1 John 3:23-24 ESV)

Believing in Christ and loving one another are inseparably linked. Love is not an optional add-on to faith — it is the evidence that God’s Spirit truly lives in us.

Pause & Pray: Read 1 John 3:11-24 slowly and thoughtfully. Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart. Then pray this prayer:

“Lord Jesus, thank You for loving me enough to lay down Your life for me. I confess that too often my love has been only in words and not in deeds. Create in me a heart that truly loves my brothers and sisters. Help me to see their needs and respond with practical kindness and sacrifice. May my life be evidence that I have passed from death to life. Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit so that I may abide in You and You in me. Amen.”

Verse to Remember: “By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.” (1 John 3:16 ESV)

Question to Consider: Looking honestly at your relationships within the church family and beyond, is your love mainly in words or is it regularly shown in practical deeds? Is there someone specific the Lord is prompting you to show love to this week in a tangible way?
