“Living Stones” – Built into a Spiritual House

“Like Newborn Infants”: Longing for the Pure Spiritual Milk - 1 Peter 2:2-10

Dear Friends, Peter is writing to believers who are scattered, suffering, and feeling like strangers in a hostile world. In the middle of their trials, he gives them a beautiful picture of what the Christian life should look like.

He begins with a tender and practical command:

“Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation” (1 Peter 2:2 ESV)

Just as a baby instinctively craves milk for growth, we should have a strong, natural desire for the pure Word of God. This is not a casual interest — it is a deep longing that leads to spiritual maturity.

Peter then reminds them (and us) of our incredible identity in Christ. We are:

  • Living stones being built up as a spiritual house
  • A holy priesthood offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ
  • A chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession

We were once “not a people,” but now we are God’s people. We once had not received mercy, but now we have received mercy.

This is one of the most encouraging descriptions of the Church in the whole New Testament. We are not random individuals trying to survive — we are a chosen, royal, holy people belonging to God, called to proclaim the excellencies of Him who called us out of darkness into His marvellous light.

For us as Christians today this passage is both humbling and exhilarating. In a world that often makes us feel insignificant or under pressure, Peter reminds us of our true identity. We are living stones in God’s temple. We are priests with direct access to God. We are a people who have received mercy.

But with great privilege comes responsibility. We are to long for the Word so we can grow. We are to offer spiritual sacrifices. We are to proclaim God’s excellencies in our daily lives.

Pause & Pray: Take a longer, unhurried moment with the Lord. Read 1 Peter 2:2-10 slowly. Ask the Holy Spirit:

“Lord, do I have a strong longing for Your Word like a newborn baby craves milk? Help me to grow in salvation. Thank You that I am part of Your chosen people, a royal priesthood. Show me how to proclaim Your excellencies today.”

Thank Him for the mercy He has shown you.

Verse to Remember: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9 ESV)

Question to Consider: Do you have a genuine, ongoing hunger for the pure Word of God? How does remembering your identity as a chosen, royal, holy people change the way you face difficulties or live out your faith this week?
