“The Lord Will Return to Zion”: From Curse to Blessing - Zechariah 8:1-13
Dear Friends, the prophet Zechariah brought these wonderful words of encouragement to the returned exiles who were struggling to rebuild the temple and their lives in Jerusalem. The work had stalled, opposition was strong, and discouragement was real. Into that situation God spoke through Zechariah with a series of powerful promises that begin with these moving words:
“Thus says the Lord of hosts: I am jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I am jealous for her with great wrath.” (Zechariah 8:2 ESV)
God declares that He is coming back to dwell in Jerusalem. The city that had known judgment and desolation will once again be filled with life — old men and old women sitting in the streets with staffs in their hands because of age, and boys and girls playing in the streets (v. 4-5). What seemed impossible in the eyes of the people would be possible with God.
The Lord then gives this beautiful promise: “I will save my people from the east country and from the west country, and I will bring them to dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in faithfulness and in righteousness” (v. 7-8).
He encourages the people not to fear but to “Let your hands be strong” (v. 9) and to get on with the work, because the days of cursing are ending and the days of blessing are beginning. “For there shall be a sowing of peace. The vine shall give its fruit…” (v. 12). God promises to prosper them and to bless them as they obey Him.
This passage is a wonderful reminder that God is a God of restoration. He can turn seasons of hardship and apparent barrenness into times of fruitfulness and joy.
Pause & Pray: Read Zechariah 8:1-13 slowly. Then pray something like this:
“Lord, thank You that You are jealous for Your people with a great love. Even when things look difficult or impossible, You are the God who restores and blesses. Strengthen my hands for the work You have called me to. Help me to trust Your promises and to believe that You can turn my difficult seasons into times of blessing. I want to be faithful to You, knowing that You are faithful to me.”
Bring before the Lord any areas of discouragement or weariness you are facing right now.
Verse to Remember: “Thus says the Lord of hosts: Let your hands be strong, you who in these days have been hearing these words from the mouth of the prophets…” (Zechariah 8:9 ESV)
Question to Consider: Is there an area of your life or the life of the church where you have felt discouraged or where progress seems slow? How does God’s promise in Zechariah 8 encourage you to “let your hands be strong” and keep going?
