“From John’s Baptism to the Holy Spirit” – A Powerful Transition

“Did You Receive the Holy Spirit?”: The Ephesus Disciples - Acts 19:1-8

Dear Friends, when Paul arrived in Ephesus he found a small group of twelve men who were described as “disciples.” However, something was clearly missing in their experience. Paul asked them a very direct question:

“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”

And they replied, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” (Acts 19:2 ESV)

These men had received John the Baptist’s baptism — a baptism of repentance — but they had not yet heard the full gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul patiently explained that John’s baptism pointed forward to Jesus, and that people should now believe in the One who had come. Upon hearing this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.

This passage shows us the importance of the full gospel. It is not enough to have a partial understanding of the truth. These men moved from an Old Testament-style repentance to a full New Testament experience — faith in Christ, baptism in His name, and the receiving of the Holy Spirit.

For us today the challenge remains the same. Have we received the Holy Spirit? Are we living in the power that God has made available to every believer? The Christian life is not meant to be lived in our own strength, but in the strength and joy of the Holy Spirit.

Pause & Pray: Read Acts 19:1-8 slowly. Ask yourself Paul’s question honestly. Then pray:

“Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. If there is any area of my life where I have been living with only a partial understanding of the gospel, please open my eyes. Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit today. Help me to walk in His power and to live boldly for You, just as these early disciples did. Amen.”

Verse to Remember: “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” (Acts 19:2 ESV)

Question to Consider: Looking at your own Christian life, would you say you are living in the power of the Holy Spirit, or are you trying to live the Christian life in your own strength? What difference would it make this week if you asked the Holy Spirit to fill and empower you afresh?
