Enter His Gates with Thanksgiving

“Make a Joyful Noise”: The Power of a Thankful Heart - Psalm 100
Dear Friends, Psalm 100 is one of the most beloved and uplifting psalms in the Bible. Often called a “psalm of thanksgiving,” it is a joyful invitation to all the earth to worship the Lord. It is short, yet packed with rich truth that lifts our hearts and directs our focus away from ourselves and onto our great God.
The psalm begins with a rousing command: “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!” (v. 1-2 ESV). Worship here is not sombre or half-hearted — it is loud, glad, and enthusiastic. God does not want reluctant service; He delights in cheerful, wholehearted praise from His people.
Then comes the foundation for this joyful worship: “Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture” (v. 3). This is our identity — we belong to Him. He is our Creator and our Shepherd. We are not wandering aimlessly; we are cared for, known, and loved by the Good Shepherd.
The Psalm continues with practical instruction: “Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!” (v. 4). Thanksgiving is the key that opens the door into God’s presence. Finally, we are given three wonderful reasons to praise Him: “For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations” (v. 5).
In a world full of uncertainty, anxiety, and negativity, Psalm 100 calls us back to joyful, thankful worship based on who God is and what He has done.
Pause & Pray: Read Psalm 100 out loud slowly and deliberately. Let the words sink in. Then pray:
“Father, thank You that You invite us to come into Your presence with singing and gladness. Help me to worship You with a joyful heart even when life feels heavy. I bring You my burdens, my worries, and my sorrows today — I don’t have to pretend they don’t exist. Yet I also choose to declare Your goodness, Your steadfast love, and Your faithfulness. Thank You that I am Yours and the sheep of Your pasture. Teach me to praise You wholeheartedly, even while honestly sharing my heavy heart with You.”
Spend time both thanking God for who He is and honestly pouring out anything that is weighing on you. He welcomes both our joy and our burdens.
Verse to Remember: “For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.” (Psalm 100:5 ESV)
Question to Consider: How can you bring both your joy and your heavy burdens honestly before the Lord in worship this week? What would it look like for you to “serve the Lord with gladness” while still being real with Him about the things that are weighing on your heart?
