A Sober Warning

“Cursed is the Man Who Trusts in Man”: The Danger of Self-Reliance - Jeremiah 17:5-6

Dear Friends, in Jeremiah 17 the Lord gives one of the clearest contrasts in the entire Bible between two ways of living. These verses are both sobering and deeply searching.

“Thus says the Lord:
‘Cursed is the man who trusts in man
and makes flesh his strength,
whose heart turns away from the Lord.
He is like a shrub in the desert,
and shall not see any good come.
He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness,
in an uninhabited salt land.’” (Jeremiah 17:5-6 ESV)

This is a strong and serious warning. When we place our ultimate trust in ourselves, in other people, in money, in politics, or in any human system, we are turning our hearts away from the Lord. The result is spiritual dryness and barrenness. Like a stunted shrub struggling to survive in a desert, such a life produces very little fruit and experiences little blessing.

The picture is vivid and painful. A desert shrub has shallow roots, survives on very little, and is constantly exposed to the scorching sun and drying winds. It never thrives. In the same way, a life that trusts in human strength rather than in God becomes spiritually parched, unstable, and unfruitful.

Thankfully, the very next verses (7-8) give us the glorious alternative — the person who trusts in the Lord is like a tree planted by streams of water, with deep roots, green leaves, and constant fruitfulness, even in times of drought.

For us as Christians today this passage is a powerful heart-check. How often do we say we trust God, yet in practice we lean on our own understanding, our savings, our plans, our relationships, or our own cleverness, or in the worst case, turn away from God altogether? Jeremiah reminds us that this is not a small thing — it leads to spiritual barrenness.

Pause & Pray: Take a quiet, honest moment before the Lord right now. Read Jeremiah 17:5-8 slowly. Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart with these questions:

“Lord, where am I trusting in myself or in other people more than in You? Where have I turned my heart away from You?”

Confess any self-reliance. Then deliberately choose to trust Him afresh and thank Him that He is trustworthy.

Verse to Remember: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord.” (Jeremiah 17:5 ESV)

Question to Consider: In what area of your life right now are you most tempted to trust in human strength, wisdom, or resources instead of the Lord? What would it look like this week to deliberately put your trust in God rather than in the arm of flesh?
