“A Leader’s Heart” – Passing the Baton

“Moses’ Last Commission” – Numbers 27:12-23

Dear Friends, in Numbers 27:12-23 we come to one of the most touching and instructive moments in the life of Moses. God speaks to him on the mountain and tells him that the time has come for him to die. Because Moses had disobeyed the Lord at Meribah (when he struck the rock twice instead of speaking to it as God commanded), he would not be permitted to enter the Promised Land.

What is so remarkable is Moses’ response. He does not argue with God. He does not complain about the punishment. Instead, his immediate concern is for the wellbeing of the people he has led for forty long years. He prays a beautiful, selfless prayer:

“Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation who shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the Lord may not be as sheep that have no shepherd.” (Numbers 27:16-17 ESV)

This prayer reveals the true heart of a spiritual leader. Moses was far more worried about the future of God’s people than about his own personal disappointment. He knew that without good leadership, the people would be like sheep without a shepherd — vulnerable, scattered, and in danger.

God’s answer to Moses’ prayer is both tender and practical. He instructs Moses to take Joshua, a man already known to be filled with the Spirit, and to publicly commission him. Moses was to lay his hands on Joshua before the whole congregation, transferring some of his authority so the people would listen to him. Joshua would not be another Moses — he would lead in his own way — but God promised to be with him.

This passage is full of important lessons for us today. It shows us that God is sovereign over every leadership transition in His church. It challenges those of us in any form of leadership to have a shepherd’s heart that puts the needs of the people before our own desires. And it encourages every believer that God never abandons His people — He always provides what is needed for the next stage of the journey.

Pause & Pray: Read Numbers 27:12-23 slowly and thoughtfully. Consider Moses’ selfless attitude and God’s faithful provision of Joshua. Then take time to pray:

“Lord, thank You for the example of Moses, who cared so deeply for Your people even when facing his own death. Forgive me for the times I have been more concerned about my own plans than the needs of others. Give me a shepherd’s heart. Thank You that You never leave Your church without leadership and care. Raise up and equip faithful leaders in our generation who are filled with Your Holy Spirit. Help me to trust You completely in every change and transition of life. Amen.”

Verse to Remember: “So the Lord said to Moses, ‘Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him.’” (Numbers 27:18 ESV)

Question to Consider: Whether you are in a leadership position or not, how can you develop a heart like Moses that genuinely cares for the spiritual wellbeing of others? Is there a situation in your life right now where you need to trust God’s timing and provision rather than holding on to your own plans?
