The Daily Word

What do you understand by the word ‘vocation’? When we got to the stage in our lives where we were able to make positive decisions about our futures, initially we relied on our abilities. For instance, I could never have followed any sort of life which involved artistic talents, because I had none, and still struggle even with decorating a room. So I went down the science route at the age of16 and followed on by taking a Chemistry degree.

A degree is a springboard which opens up more options for a working career and yet my working life has developed in a pragmatic way, but I would never call it vocational. On the other hand, those who follow a life path in the church or religious groups, I would say they follow a vocational pathway, they are called to serve God in a dedicated way. And serving God as a missionary in a foreign land is definitely vocational.

The word ‘vocation’ comes from a Latin verb and basically means a calling. It is a strong word, and it demands total focus on a goal. In the King James Version of the Bible, the word ‘vocation, only occurs once, in Ephesians 4: “Walk worthy of the vocation wherewith you were called”.

When we accepted the Lord Jesus as our Saviour, we responded to the call of God through the gospel. We were then ‘translated’ as Colossians puts it, from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of God. We were made citizens of heaven and brought into God’s family. And as family members we should never act in a way that brings shame to the family, we are to live our lives as living representatives of God and we follow His standards and not our own or those of the world we live in. We entered into an eternal contract with God but this temporal life we live should reflect His character.
