Back in the records in the Old Testament, in 2 Samuel 7, king David was in a quandary. He wanted to give something back to God for the way God had led him. With God’s help, he had established the country of Israel, all his enemies had been defeated, and he was in his splendid palace. Then an idea came to him, to build a temple so that all the jews could come and worship God. The Ark of the Covenant, the most holy symbol of God’s presence, was sitting in a temporary shelter and he wanted to bring it into a permanent and worthy building.
He told Nathan, the prophet of his idea and God then passed a message through Nathan to David, that he wouldn’t be allowed to do what seemed to be such an offering to God and that his son, Solomon, would be the one to do so David accepted God’s ruling with humility, an example we should follow when God closes a door on a work we want to do for Him, and then made this statement that is so true for each of us today, “For You, Lord God, know your servant”. God knows us better than we know ourselves and like David, we need to acknowledge His sovereignty. We may be able to present a face to other people, which is not the real person we are, but God knows exactly who and what we are. We need to be honest before Him and like He did for David, He will lead us. “In all our ways acknowledge Him and he will direct our paths”.
