The Daily Word

Whenever we turn to the Bible, particularly in the New Testament, scarcely a page does not contain an action about or encouragement to love. And as we were learning in our Bible Study group last night, the aim of the Jewish Law really was to use the Law to generate love for God not just as a yardstick for measuring our behaviour.
All love ultimately has its source in God who has given us the capacity to love one another and to love Him in return, because the Bible says quite truly that God is Love. When we accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour, that capacity to love in truth and in practice was increased and all our words and actions should be motivated by love.
In 1 Thessalonians 3, Paul prays a blessing for the church at Thessalonica and also by default to us also: “The Lord make you to increase and abound in love”. The vision here is of a container that is being filled and just overflows spreading its contents around. That should characterise every Christian, whether to friends or to those with whom we come into contact with, practical and heartfelt love. Jesus Himself said “Hereby shall men know that you are my Disciples, if you love one another!”
In the light of these admonitions, let each of us look into our hearts and see whether our love level is full and overflowing.
