The story of Ruth and Boaz is a beautiful love story. A Moabite widow, who had emigrated to, Israel with her mother in law, with little means of support goes gleaning in a rich Jewish farmer’s field. She did not realise that this man was also a relative of her mother-in-law. It is a type of Cinderella story and certainly has a very happy ending as she becomes a direct ancestor of Jesus through her marriage to Boaz.
There are many easy comparisons to be drawn between Boaz’ actions and God’s intervention on our behalf through His Son because both were motivated by love. But early on in this love story, Ruth asks a question that we all ask of God many times about our salvation from sin. “Why have I found grace in Your eyes, that You should take knowledge of me?”
We marvel always when we think of Jesus’ death and often think that His sacrifice was directly for each one of us, individually. We see nothing in ourselves, even now, after we have been saved, that could merit God’s interest in us. Ruth loved her mother-in-law and was always seeking to help her, but we did nothing for God before we were saved. And we echo Paul’s great statement in Ephesians, “By grace we have been saved, through faith, and that not of ourselves, but it is the gift of God”. Hallelujah!
