Soon we shall be celebrating the Feast of Pentecost, which occurs 50 days after Easter. The small nucleus of Jesus Disciples and those who had followed Jesus during His ministry and been converted by His Gospel, received power by the coming of the Holy Spirit and the church was born. The Gospel took a massive hold and thousands were converted.
Whether the Disciples were ready or not, God provided them with converts who needed to be led on in their new-found faith. It must have been a challenging time, but God provided them with the wisdom to lead this flock and in Acts 2 v 42 we have the ‘recipe’ for spiritual success, “And they devoted themselves to the Apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, to breaking of bread and to prayer”.
That same ‘recipe’ is how spiritual growth and success is still achieved today. The ‘breaking of bread’ was probably more of a communal meal at the first but by the time Paul was writing to the Corinthians, it had absorbed the Lord’s Supper and that is what we celebrate each week. We too should be ready to participate in those 4 forms of communication with our Saviour when we come today and every week. And as we let the Holy Spirit work in our meeting, He will stimulate worship from our hearts as once more we remember the Lord’s death until He come.
