The Daily Word

We are all used to being directed and advised in our lives. It starts in the home in our early life, continues at school and carries on into our adult life at work. Anyone who has been in the armed services knows the power of an order from a superior officer. I can think of no one except for the most powerful political leaders, who shall remain unnamed, of countries, who don’t have someone to answer to.
Sometimes advice is annoying or even becomes a burden, sometimes we welcome it. At the start of Jesus ministry, He went to a wedding with His mother, Mary. A crisis developed which could have spoilt the wedding completely. Mary became aware of the crisis and spoke to Jesus about it because she was also aware that Jesus had some special powers. So she said to the servants who were in the middle of the crisis, “Whatever He (Jesus) says to you, do it”. Jesus worked a miracle which involved the servants filling large containers with water, which they duly obeyed, and the crisis was turned into a time of rejoicing.
The advice Mary gave to the servants, should be our guide for life. We hear God speaking to us through prayer or reading the Bible or through any of God’s servants who come to speak to us, and we have a choice, follow what God has revealed to us and follow a path of blessing or ignore what He is telling us and become poorer in spirit. And we should always, daily, ask God to speak to us and lead us through each day. The decision to follow God or not was put to the Israelites by Joshua and we face that same decision daily or sometimes hourly, “Choose you this day whom you will serve!”
